What is an “immediate-load dental implant”?

For full-arch dental implants (most immediate-load cases): multiple implants are placed and a provisional full-arch prosthesis is attached the same day, when initial stability and site health allow. You go home with new teeth while the bone heals.

For single-tooth dental implants (selected cases): one implant is placed and a non-loading provisional crown may be attached the same day; it’s shaped out of your bite and you’ll be asked to chew on the other side during early healing.

Important: Day-of teeth are provisional, and biological healing (osseointegration) still typically takes 2–6 months. Your prosthodontist determines whether immediate or delayed loading is safest for your case.

What does it mean to have an immediate-load dental implant?

Back when implant dentistry was an emerging field, teeth weren’t attached until the implant was able to fuse to the bone. The concern was that if teeth were attached to the implant too soon, this “load” placed on the implant would interrupt osseointegration. Because osseointegration is the process where the bone fuses to the titanium implant, and it’s the key to implant restorations’ longevity.

As research developed, new advancements allowed the implant to stay in position while initial osseointegration took hold. This initial stability allowed a provisional tooth to be attached to the implant, in a process we call immediate loading. Osseointegration continues while the prosthesis is in place.

Is immediate-load right if I want a same-day smile?

Immediate loading refers to placing dental implants and attaching provisional teeth the same day, for eligible patients. It’s designed to restore appearance and function while you heal — your final prosthesis is placed after the bone bonds to the implants.

When same-day provisional teeth are possible

Your prosthodontist will recommend immediate loading only when there’s enough initial stability and control of forces or load on the implant.  You can help control these forces by chewing away from the implant and following soft-food instructions. Your doctor will let you know when it’s safe to resume a normal diet.

If initial stability is poor, and your doctor determines that the bone around the implant is soft, the implant restoration may require the delayed loading approach. In this case, a prosthesis is placed later on, after there has been time for osseointegration.

Who is eligible for immediate-load implants?

Eligibility is based on your overall health and bone quality/volume, not just your goals or timeline. At ClearChoice, your evaluation is thorough and provider-led.

Your care team reviews 3D CBCT imaging, gum and bite health, and medical history (including medications) to plan a predictable approach.

When immediate loading is not recommended

If initial stability can’t be achieved, if there’s active infection, or if medical factors increase risk, your prosthodontist may recommend a delayed-load plan instead. This gives the implant more time to heal without load (no provisional teeth), allowing osseointegration to progress as expected.

How immediate-load treatment works

For eligible patients, extractions and implant placement can be completed in a single visit, with provisional teeth attached the same day. All details — including materials and workflows — are recommended by your ClearChoice team based on your case.

Extractions, implant placement, & provisional teeth in one visit (when appropriate)

Your prosthodontist places implants using a prosthetically driven plan informed by 3D imaging and direct evaluation of the bone when the implant is placed. In some cases, extraction and placement may happen in the same visit.

You’ll leave with provisional teeth designed for comfort and function during healing. Your final teeth are delivered after the bone has bonded to the implants.

What to expect after immediate loading

Biological healing and osseointegration still typically takes 2–6 months. Technology can streamline planning and appointments, but it does not shorten bone healing.

You’ll receive instructions for diet, hygiene, and follow-ups to protect implant stability while you heal.

Immediate vs delayed loading: how do they differ?

Both approaches aim for long-term success; the difference is when teeth are attached to the implant.

Timing and stability requirements

Immediate loading places provisional teeth the same day; delayed loading waits for healing first. Immediate loading requires specific stability and health conditions.

If your case would benefit from more healing time or additional site preparation, a delayed plan can support predictable outcomes. Your prosthodontist will explain why.

Immediate-load implants FAQs

Is immediate-load treatment painful?Will I be awake?

Most patients report a manageable recovery. Anesthesia options are available; your team will discuss what’s appropriate for you.

How many implants can be done in one day?

That’s determined by your prosthodontist based on initial stability and bone quality.

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Advantages include efficiency and immediate appearance/function with provisional teeth. Considerations include stricter stability requirements and the need to protect the implant from forces (like chewing) while healing.
